UNSW Digital Grid Futures Institute has contributed to a variety of open-source tools, courses, and reports since its inception.
Below is a directory of some resources our members have created with the Institute's support.
Open Source Tools
NEMSEER - A package for downloading and handling forecasts for the National Electricity Market (NEM) from the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO).
PreCool Tool - An online web application simulating solar pre-cooling for a range of existing buildings in Australian building stock.
NEMGLO - The Green-energy Load Optimisation tool for the Australian National Electricity Market (NEM) is a python tool allows users to counterfactually assess flexible load operating strategies in the NEM using historical market data.
NEM Bidding Dashboard - Dashboard for visualising Australian National Electricity Market bidding data.
HySupply Ammonia Analysis Tool - a Microsoft Excel Workbook developed to model and cost ammonia production via the Haber-Bosch process, using renewable energy (solar PV and wind) as a key power source and green hydrogen from an electrolyser.
Courses
Understanding the Risks of Lithium-Ion Battery Systems - Learn everything you need to know about working safely with lithium-ion batteries with our free, concise online course. Suitable for everyone from the general public to tradespeople or e-mobility enthusiasts.
Grid Integration of Renewables Using PSCAD - Delivered in partnership with Aurecon, this course combines several timely topics in power engineering and the grid integration of renewable energy resources using PSCAD.
Reports
Green Energy Statecraft for Comprehensive National Security - Elizabeth Thurbon, Alexander M. Hynd, Hao Tan, Susan Park, Andrew Walter
Research and analysis have highlighted the potential national security benefits of the green energy transition in terms of its economic, social, environmental and geostrategic payoffs. But these components have not been integrated in a strategic new approach to energy transition governance. We call this new approach Green Energy Statecraft, offering it as an ‘ideal type’ conceptual framework for researchers and national decision makers alike to better develop ambitious, strategic and effective green energy policy.
Driving Change: Investigating the attitudes, perspectives and behaviours of electric vehicle charging etiquette in Australia - Arya Shinde, Carolyn Mazariego, Natalie Taylor
Electric vehicle (EV) adoption is accelerating, but as more Australians plug into this technology, new challenges are surfacing at public charging stations. This report investigates the issues of infrastructure and charging etiquette, proposing innovative solutions that could set global benchmarks.
School Resources
Energy Transformers - an innovative and engaging mobile game aimed at Australian upper primary and lower secondary students (ages 10-13). Energy Transformers takes players through 34 Energy Challenges, encouraging critical thinking and problem-solving.
Energy Transformers on Play Store (Android) | Energy Transformers on App Store (Apple) (The game is best enjoyed on an iPad or tablet device)
The Orbispace Initiative - delivering STEM Innovation Programs for girls, equipping them with both the soft and hard skills needed to become changemakers driving the transition to a sustainable future.
Other Resources
Technology Translation Squad - an initiative that provides rapid support for SMEs, startups, and established industry players. Our team of electrical engineers are on hand to give ‘roadside’ assistance to overcome technical challenges in the decarbonisation and electrification sector.
Making Good Media - This project is developing an innovative media framework to inform and empower broad audiences on climate issues without increasing climate anxiety.
